Notes for Autumn 2017

In 2017, I’m re-reading some old favourites and looking for new favourites.

I’ve reread Jack Hodgins, and still in the rereading stack are Dorothea Brande’s Becoming a Writer, John Gardner’s On Becoming a Novelist and Eudora Welty’s One Writer’s Beginnings.

As for more recent fare, I’ve recently finished Ann Patchett’s essay “The Getaway Car” and Maxine Clair’s Imagine This.

I’m interested in reading some writer’s diaries (working and otherwise) this year. Last year I discovered Dawn Powell’s diaries and John Steinbeck’s (which Louise DeSalvo recommended).

Let me know if you have favourites. I’m always happy to add to a reading list.

And now, a November day, flattened by wind and sorry, the trees throwing their bare branches about outside my windows, I shut down my computer for the day, unwilling at this hour – five o’clock, already dark – to award them what they haven’t the wit to define.
